Youth Exchanges

Youth exchange (YE) is a meeting of youth coming from different, in majority European countries, during which young people work together on a specific project. The programme promotes non-formal education, based on team-work, tolerance and respect. Youth exchanges develop in participants creativity, innovation, critical thinking and social awareness. By multiple activities, such as workshops, games, debates, etc.. young people are familiarised with different cultures, religions and traditions and encouraged to share ideas and work together towards a common goal.

Youth exchanges are intended for participants aged 13 – 30 years old and last between 5 and 21 days. Accommodation and food are provided. Moreover, the travel cost is covered.

We have got an article from the participant (Polina Mykhailichenko) of the project 4 Elements - Lets Play and Save The Planet which took place in Romania🇷🇴

Starting from 22.08 till 02.09 in small Romanian city Busteni youngsters from 7 different countries were gathered together for a youth exchange “4 Elements”.

Our main objective was to learn in a non-formal way about 4 main elements: fire, water, earth, and air. About their qualities, how they interact with each other, how do people use them in everyday life, about natural disasters which involve 4 elements and of course how can we prevent them and save the Earth.

Our first day was devoted to getting to know each other with ice-breakers, name games, small tasks like exploring the city in teams, and just chatting with others. From the second day, we started working right away. We ad a lot of interesting activities and each one of them was done by different methods.
Inland art. Activity participants used whatever they could find in the forest to create art. The piece had to represent 4 elements.

In World cafe, there were 4 moderators seated by 4 tables and for almost 2 hours other participants were discussing each element: what is the good side of the earth, water, fire, and air, and what dangers they can cause.
Later on, we had heated debates where we had to agree or disagree on earlier prepared statements. Every side of each argument had a lot to say about why they support and are against it.

One of the best things in the project was cultural evenings. On the first cultural evening Romania, Spain, and Greece presented their cuisine. Everyone had an opportunity to try Spanish cheese and chorizo, Romanian tsuika, cookies Eugenia and Rom waffles, Greek bread with olives and ouzo. The second cultural evening we tried Polish kabanosy, sausages and Soplica, Bulgarian rakia and Ljutenica, Serbian ground biscuits plazma, and Italian cheese and wine from different regions.

We also had a traditional Romanian evening where our hosts kindly prepared different kinds of food and everyone tried mici, cheeses and more!
One day was devoted to visiting Brasov and Bran’s castle. And on another day our group went to a local waterfall and on the way back we were picking up trash to clean the forest!

Our 4 main workshops were about storytelling, theater plays, filmmaking, and board games. Storytelling was about coming up with a story about one of the assigned team elements. All the stories were fantastic because each one was unique and was written in a different way. We listened to a fantasy story about an endangered dragon as a symbol of people’s destruction, a story about an 8th continent Iropa which in the end got polluted and poisoned. A roleplay story about how even the smallest piece of trash left contributes to a bigger disasters. A story about people lost in an unknown land with polluted air which turned to be Earth.

Later we had a theater workshop where some of those stories got incorporated and some were totally new. There were 8 plays in total. For example, we had a story about fire held in captivity by greedy people:

8 Theater (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kmMkoJ4z3I)
A play about a trial Earth vs A businessman wherein end one of the lawyers got bribed and betrayed the Earth:

5 Theater (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRreOMAlRiw )
An advertisement-theater play about how in the future we may need to pay for some technologies to breathe normal and clean air instead of smog:

2 Theater (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq-MClVgXHI )
While working on our films we’ve also completed another task and created posters, a couple of my personal favorites:

In films, each team showed in various ways their ideas about one of the 4 elements. We saw videos where actors were game-characters and were fighting (Air Combat - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxdbrXcIsJI), dark humor about how to not waste water (Precious - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdcsdQki_90), Scooby-Doo parody on catching an air pollution monster (Scooby-doo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZrrVaAVZ5I and air pollution monster - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZrrVaAVZ5I&feature=youtu.be) and much more funny but educational videos.
Last two days we were working on board games by reusing paper, plastic, bottle caps, old magazines, and so on. As a result, we had Eco-Monopoly, a game with QR-codes, Eco-Scrabble, a game where you spin an arrow and later answer questions, etc.

As a small conclusion, this project was an amazing experience and a perfect combination of both learning and having fun! We got to meet so many great people from all around Europe and spend 2 weeks in their company. We did a great job working on all of those amazing tasks prepared by our facilitators: Tolea, Fabi, and Bogdan. Simultaneously we worked on our soft and practical skills while creating each time new things! I am really happy that I was a part of this project which definitely took a special place in my heart.

It was 60 people from 9 countries :)))))

We continue telling about our great youth exchange Our Carpathian stories which took place in Ukraine on 30th of August - 13th of September

After a challenging but beautiful hike we changed our location and moved to Хата-Майстерня // Khata-Maysternya a great location in Carpathian mountains with an almost magical atmosphere and great nature around.

We stayed there for 4 days and during these days we learned about Erasmus+, project management, the history of Ukraine and Turkey, made a circus, rugby and Thai-boxing workshops, had a mindfulness session and learned about Ukrainian herbs and their usage. All these workshops were developed and delivered by project participants.

We also cooked lots of great and tasty food: Swedish meatballs, Ukrainian borsch, Crimean Tatar plov, Turkish Hünkar beğendi, Spanish tortillas, Indian Khichdi and German oatmeal.

A great moment was the visit to Baba Marias shopping mall located in Babin, where we had a chance to get amazing local socks and hear stories from legendary Baba Maria.

On one of the nights, we went for the night hike, to look at the stars and enjoy the peaceful Carpathians

We also developed ideas for storytelling projects to be made by participants and had time to work on them.

After that, we went to Lviv, where we learned the city better, went on excursion organised by Olha - our participant from previous project and also played paintball. On the last day of the project, we presented project results to each other and will present them to you in the next post.

As for now check some pictures from Hata Maysternya

This youth exchange was implemented by Logos, Kompetenta Unga, Lernlabor, European Integration Group, Karas, Amazing Educaiton and was financed by Erasmus+
